Continuing on, marvel at the engineering feat of the Bonneville Dam while Mt. Hood, Oregon's tallest peak stands watch in the distance. At the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center learn about the fascinating natural wonder of the Gorge before continuing the journey through central Oregon, a land of many contrasts and extremes from desert and forest to volcanos and rolling plains. Arrive at our overnight stop at the Shilo Inn in the city of Bend, which boasts 300 days of sunshine a year.
Day Three: Bend to Klamath Falls, Oregon * Breakfast Crater Lake - no place on earth combines a deep pure lake, so blue in colour; sheer surrounding cliffs almost two thousand feet high; a picturesque island and a violent volcanic past. View the phenomena of this six-mile wide caldera created by the eruption of Mt. Mazama almost 7,000 years ago from the 30-mile rim drive (weather permitting). Overnight in Klamath Falls at the Shilo Inn, overlooking the Cascade Mountain Range and Klamath Lake.
Day Four: Klamath Falls to Sacramento, California *Breakfast & Dinner Leaving volcano country behind, sit back, relax and enjoy the sights as we travel past the mountains and lakes and the fertile and agricultural farmland of Northern California. Take in the beauty of Mt. Shasta and the blue-green waters of Shasta Lake. Arrive into Sacramento and settle in at the Vagabond Inn, chosen for its great location and proximity to shopping, restaurants and Old Town Sacramento. Following a free afternoon exploring Old Town, enjoy a delicious dinner onboard the Delta King Paddlewheeler this evening. Though the Delta King no longer cruises, this beautifully restored 1920's era riverboat provides the perfect backdrop for an evening meal.
Day Five: Sacramento to Santa Barbara, California * Breakfast & Welcome Reception Bid farewell to California's State Capital and travel south along I-5 past Stockton and enter San Luis Obispo County located in the heart of California's Central Coast. Imagine London, Sydney or Buenos Aires - great food, great shopping and great culture. Now shrink it to about 20 square miles, delete traffic and noisy crowded streets, surround it with beautiful mountains, rolling valleys and miles of beautiful beach. Welcome to the American Riviera - Santa Barbara. Settle in to this beautiful community with our next two nights at the Best Western Pepper Tree, a Spanish inspired hotel with lush gardens and pathways lined with palm trees and cascading bougainvillea.
Day Six: Santa Barbara, California Situated between the mountains and the ocean, Santa Barbara is a fascinating destination that is rich in historical and cultural interest. Today's city tour with local step-on guide will introduce us to the Spanish influence that is evident in many of the buildings including the County Courthouse and the Old Mission Santa Barbara. This afternoon enjoy the beaches, shopping and restaurants of this beautiful city on your own.
Day Seven: Santa Barbara to Monterey, California Following the very scenic Highway 101, we make our way to Hearst Castle, once the fabulous home of newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst. The tour of this magnificent home, complete with 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms and 22,000 artifacts from around the globe will transport you back in time through the interpretation of a combination of many aspects regarding the estate, including William Randolph Hearst and his family, and the collection, architecture, gardens and lifestyle at the Castle. Nothing like this estate exists anywhere else in the world. This afternoon arrive at the spectacular coastal community of Monterey. Our home for the next two nights is the Mariposa Inn and Suites.
Day Eight: Monterey, California *Breakfast & Wine & Cheese Reception Expereince the Monterey Peninsula through the eyes of a local naturalist and historian guide as she enhances your visit to one of the most scenic areas on the Pacific Coast. Begin with a visit to the world-famous Monterey Aquarium with over 500 species and a million gallon fish tank! Following lunch and shopping at nearby Cannery Row, travel one of the most spectacular drives in the world - 17 Mile Drive. A meeting between land and sea, the drive winds its way through the seaside communities of Pacific Grove Pebble Beach, home of the legendary golf course of the same name and Carmel-by-the-Sea. Anticipated stops include Bird Rock, Lone Cypress (a 200 - 300 year old tree) and the lodge at the Pebble Beach. Return to the hotel for a wine & cheese reception on the patio this afternoon.
Day Nine: Monterey to San Francisco, California * Breakfast & Dinner After a short drive with more spectacular coastal views, we arrive in the city where many have "left their hearts" - San Francisco. The city tour hosted by a local San Francisco step-on guide will include many of the city's famous landmarks such as Telegraph Hill, Union Square, Russian Hill, Lombard Street and the Nob Hill Mansions. Our next 2 nights will be at the Holiday Inn on Fisherman's Wharf. This evening dine on Pier 39 at the Fog Harbour Restaurant.
Day Ten: San Francisco Today is yours to enjoy the City by the Bay. Hop on a cable car, visit nearby Cannery Row and Ghirardelli Square or take a stroll down our up Lombard Street, known as the 'crookedest street in the world'. Take a cruise to 'The Rock', only accessible by boat and see where such infamous criminals as Machine Gun Kelly, Al Capone and Robert 'Birdman' Stroud were incarcerated. Climb to the top of Coit Tower where the view spans 360 degrees. The choices are endless. Enjoy the many sights and sounds of this beautiful city.
Day Eleven: San Franciso to Eureka, California *Boxed Lunch Travel through California's northern wine country which produces not only some of the world's finest wines, but is also one of the state's most scenic regions. Never ending vineyards spread across valleys and rolling hills provide the backdrop as we continue north along Highway 101 to the Avenue of the Giants Scenic Byway. This magnificent scenic drive is sure to be a highlight as you travel among giant redwoods, many between 600 and 1,200 years old that tower above the ground. Visit a giant redwood known as Big Tree before we arrive in Eureka, the largest city on the California North Coast with over 100 preserved Victorian-era homes. Settle in for the night at the B/W Humboldt Bay Inn.
Day Twelve: Eureka to Yachats, Oregon *Breakfast Experience one of the most scenic drives in North America as we continue to travel north along Highway 101 to Yachats. Our hotel for the night is the Adobe Resort, situated on the edge of the rocky Oregon coastline; the Adobe offers ocean view rooms and a full-service restaurant and lounge where you can dine while enjoying panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
